After becoming incorporated in 1916, Braselton’s borders primarily included land owned by the Braselton family. With growth by voluntary annexation, Braselton now spans four (4) counties, and Braselton's census data shows Braselton's diverse population, along with Barrow Co., Gwinnett Co., Hall Co., and Jackson Co.
The Town of Braselton's census data reflects a population that is 77% White, 12% African-American, 5% Hispanic, 4% Multi-racial, and 2% Asian. With over 28% of Braselton’s population being under the age of 18 (i.e., around 4,000), the number of students available for a charter school far exceeds the anticipated attendance.
Also, Braselton owns 15 acres of land that includes an abandoned school building, ball fields, a playground, and raw land for future development. On the ball fields, Braselton has the right to use those fields as needed, and Braselton has an agreement that allows use by Jackson Co. Parks & Recreation. The school is also adjacent to Braselton's splash pad, tennis courts, another community playground, and just down the street from Braselton's Library.
Considering this potential student population, the academic background of adults in Braselton (i.e., over 50% of persons 25+ years in Braselton have a Bachelors Degree or higher), and the available facilities, there is a demand and opportunity for Innovative and Superior Academics in Braselton. Unfortunately, statistics from the Governor's Office of Student Achievement show that locally available public schools are not fully meeting this demand for Innovative and Superior Academics.
Braselton residents attending Hall County Schools follow this feeder pattern: Chestnut Mountain Elementary School - GOSA C - or - Friendship Elementary School - GOSA D; Cherokee Bluff Middle School - GOSA D; Cherokee Bluff HS - GOSA C.
Braselton residents attending Barrow County Schools follow this feeder pattern: Bramlett Elementary School - GOSA A (previously C); Russell Middle School - GOSA B (previously C); Winder-Barrow High School - GOSA C (previously D).
Braselton residents attending Jackson County Schools follow this feeder pattern: West Jackson Elementary School - GOSA C; West Jackson Middle School - GOSA B (previously C); Jackson County High School - GOSA B.
Braselton residents attending Gwinnett County Schools follow this feeder pattern: Duncan Creek Elementary School - GOSA B; Osborne Middle School - GOSA B (previously A); Mill Creek High School - GOSA B (previously A).
In addition to what is self-evident from these GOSA scores, some of these public schools are operating out of portable classrooms due to higher-than-expected capacity. Hall County recently opened Flowery Branch HS to alleviate over-capacity at Cherokee Bluff HS. Gwinnett County plans to open Seckinger HS to alleviate over-capacity from one of the largest high schools in Georgia - Mill Creek.
